Why a joiner and not a carpenter?
Joinery and carpentry are both construction trades. In its most simplest and traditional sense, joiners ‘join’ wood in a workshop, whereas carpenters construct the building elements on-site.
When considering who would be best to help with a project, it's worth noting that the skill in making construction components (such as windows, doors, trusses, stairs, etc) is in the joints - this is where a joiner is specialised. But, carpenters typically work on site, so their specialised skill is in dealing with wood fixtures in the context of an ongoing job.
Joiners build, make and create furniture, windows and stairs, etc. Carpenters fit stairs, windows, floors, shelving and cupboards, etc. There are of course some overlaps as most carpenters and joiners will have learnt the basics of both trades before specialising. However, while a joiner may make you a stunning bespoke staircase, for example, a carpenter may do a better job in fitting it in your house.
A joiner is essentially someone who makes the product that a carpenter installs or repairs.
We like to think of our joiners as craftsmen.
Is it worth it?
If you have an awkward space in your home or want something distinctive, then joinery is the way to go, even if it can be expensive. Flat-packed or pre-fabricated kitchens, for example, can work very well if they fit perfectly into your space and are extremely well fitted, however, this often isn’t the case and if you have an expensive property then it would be madness to skimp on a kitchen lacking in quality. A joiner can create something very bespoke and beautiful that will maximise the space and make sense of the way you live.

The Process
1. Find a reputable company (like us!)
2. It is good to know what you want. Which rooms do you need to update? Do you need storage so that you can finally be able to de-clutter the house? Do you have a spare room that you can turn into that ‘his and hers' walk-in dressing room you always wanted? Or perhaps you’d like a dressing table area in a teenager’s room where she can sit and do makeup by simply lifting up the lid to the desk and revealing a huge lit mirror containing all her hidden makeup? There are so many things that can be created for you that will enhance your day-to-day living experience at home.
3. We find it really helps for people to send us pictures of the sort of things they like. Using scrapbooking websites like Houzz and Pinterest is a very useful tool because, even if you aren’t sure what you want, by saving examples of things you like, we can usually find the common thread that attracts you to those images / designs and work out from there what would work best for you.
4. We provide a full measuring and fitting process and produce CAD drawings to help you visualise the designs in more details.
5. A deposit is paid and the work commences. A fitting date arranged and the rest is left to us to deliver, as promised.
6. A very happy client living happier in their home.
